Ribal Al-Assad expresses concerns about Al-Qaida involvement in Syria in interview with SF TV
martes, 21 febrero 2012This report by Swiss National TV SF covers a demonstration in London by Hizb ut-Tahrir, UK, which called for the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate state in Syria.
Taji Mustafa, the official spokesman for Hizb ut-Tahrir UK (The Liberation Party) spoke to SF TV at Saturday's demonstration.
It went as follows:
Question: Are you fighting for a democratic Syria?
Taji Mustafa: Answer: "The idea that democracy is the only model of government in the world is a very short-sighted European idea. For over 1000 years the caliphate existed across the Muslim world and democracy is increasingly questioned even in Europe."
Talking about his fellow demonstrators:
Question: The CIA says that the Syrian opposition is infiltrated by Al-Qaida. What do you think about it?
Taji Mustafa: Answer: "Yes, many of their chants are increasingly Islamic chants. But that should not be surprising because they are largely a muslim population. So I think to tarnish this and to try to say these are people are terrorists, frankly is a nonsense".
Another demonstrator gave SF TV the following interview:
SF TV Question: How do you see the future of Syria. A democratic state or an Islamic state with the sharia?
Answer: "I believe that the western democracy has brought a lot of bad acts in the past. And I believe that the sharia is a governance manifested by the almighty Allah who created the heavens and the earth and all mankind and that the sharia is a law based on the manifestation given by the creator. And that's what we need to recognize. We need to recognize our people, our creator and the people of the Muslim Umma. If you don't recognise that, you will not recognise yourself on the day of judgement".
Commenting on the views of Hizb ut-Tahrir spokesman and others at the demonstration, Ribal Al-Assad, Director of the ODFS, said:
"The views expressed by these people and their aim to establish an Islamic caliphate state in Syria is deeply disturbing. What makes matters worse is that these are the views of Islamist members of the Syrian opposition, some of whom were at this demonstration. Islamists must not be allowed to hijack the peaceful revolution in Syria. Furthermore other groups such as Al-Qaida must not be allowed to infiltrate the opposition. The Syrian opposition should unite and work towards an inclusive, peaceful, democratic transition".
