Brussels: Ribal Al-Assad calls for peaceful transitional reform in Syria in European Parliament Conference

Ribal Al-Assad, Founder & Director of the ODFS and Dr. Halla Diab, Spokeswoman for the ODFS, this week spoke at a conference on Syria in the European Parliament hosted by ECR UK MEP Sajjad Karim. Other speakers included members of Syrian opposition groups and a representative from the External Action Service. The public hearing discussed the current situation in Syria and its next steps, and the role the EU can play.

The conference was followed by a press conference by Mr Karim where Ribal also spoke.

Commenting on the conference, Ribal Al-Assad said:

“I was delighted and honoured to speak at the conference and would like to thank Mr Sajjad Karim MEP for taking the initiative and holding an excellent event at this critical time for Syria. The discussion was informative and educational and highlighted the key steps that need to be taken to help end the repression in Syria and move peacefully towards political and religious pluralism. Otherwise Syria may be plunged into a fully fledged civil war, which could escalate into a regional war. This would be a disaster and must not be allowed to happen. Therefore it is imperative that the Syrian opposition unite on to one common platform and act in a practical and pragmatic way to bring change peacefully. I hope that all the Syrian opposition will soon sit together in the European Parliament and engage in constructive dialogue for the sake of their country and people.”
