Ribal Al-Assad condemns use of chemical weapons in Syria and supports UN Investigation

Amid reports of chemical weapons being used in Syria, Ribal Al-Assad, Director of the ODFS, has today called for the UN investigation in Syria to be given the chance to conclude its report before any decision is made by the international community.

Commenting on the situation, Ribal Al-Assad has said the following:

“I wholeheartedly condemn the use of chemical weapons and am tremendously concerned by the reports coming through.

However I echo the call of the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich, and urge foreign governments who have mooted military intervention not to make any brash decisions and wait to make an informed decision on the matter.

There is certainly no way that any unilateral action should be taken without the support of the UN Security Council.

Whilst there is no doubt that the perpetrators of this heinous attack must be brought to justice, we must be absolutely certain of who the perpetrators are before any action is taken.

In response to some foreign officials saying that the UN team has had a delay in accessing the site (and evidence subsequently being removed in the mean time), I fail to see how or why this compromises the investigation.

This is a red herring and should not be used as an excuse for military intervention.

The UN team only arrived in Syria last Sunday to investigate attacks that happened several months ago, so how can they not – three days after – find out who the perpetrators are? If they are able to look at evidence from several months back, then surely they can find out swiftly, and fairly decisively, who perpetrated this most recent act?

Let’s us also not forget that a UN report has previously stated that Rebels could have used chemical weapons; only earlier this year 12 Islamist jihadists from the Al-Nusra front were arrested in Adana and Mersia (Southern Turkey)for possession of 2kg of Sarin gas.

With this in mind we must remember that both sides have the capability to launch such attacks and I urge the international community not to fall into any trap as this could drag the whole region into a full out regional war.

This would spell disaster not just for Syria but the whole free world.

For the moment, all efforts should continue to be on finding a political solution to the conflict with all parties who genuinely believe in freedom and democracy. The international community must stand and fight against extremism – not just in Syria, but wherever it exists.”
