{"id":6660,"date":"2013-07-17T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-17T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/odf-syria.org\/?p=6660"},"modified":"2025-09-05T13:20:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T13:20:49","slug":"pakistani-taliban-sending-fighters-to-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/odf-syria.org\/tr\/pakistani-taliban-sending-fighters-to-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistani Taliban sending fighters to Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pakistani Taliban: &#8216;We sent hundreds of fighters&#8217; to Syria<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NBC News<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15 JULY, 2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders of the Pakistani Taliban claim to have sent \u201chundreds of fighters\u201d to Syria to support local mujahideen forces in their struggle against President Bashar Assad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior commanders in the militant Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, a group considered close to al-Qaeda, said they were sending fighters on the request of their \u201cArab friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When our Muslim brothers sought our help, we sent hundreds of fighters to fight alongside their Arab friends,\u201d a senior Tehrik-e-Taliban commander said Sunday, on the condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We will soon issue videos of our fighters winning goods and properties of the enemy in Syria,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another commander for the group, that is known to host foreign militants in the lawless tribal regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, said that they were bound to help because Syrian fighters had supported them in Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have established our own camps in Syria, but some of our people go and then return after spending some time fighting there,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The militant group is led by Hakimullah Mahsud \u2013 who the FBI offered a $5 million reward for on their Most Wanted Terrorist list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, senior Pakistani government and military authorities challenged the group&#8217;s claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;How can they claim to be sending fighters to Syria when they failed to resist Pakistani security forces and surrendered their strongholds in the tribal areas,&#8221; a senior military official in Peshawar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that they wanted to get international attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their claims come as an increasing number of foreign fighters enter the two-year-old conflict that has killed more than 90,000 people, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guerrillas from the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah have recently helped forces loyal to Assad recapture important regions in central Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Troops backed by tanks and artillery also moved into a rebel-held district of Damascus on Monday, stepping up efforts to drive opposition fighters from the capital and build on battlefield gains elsewhere in the country, a rebel commander told NBC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the news, ODFS Director, Ribal Al-Assad said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt comes as no surprise that the Pakistani Taliban have sent fighters to assist the overwhelmingly Islamist rebels in Syria, increasingly we are seeing Syria descend into an arena for proxy sectarian war between factions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These Islamist rebels have one aim, to fight and kill as many moderates or minorities as possible \u2013 their perverted ideology means that they will stop at nothing to achieve their aims and the international community, Pakistan included, must do more to stop their citizens from travelling to fight in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to realise that the more extremists travel to Syria, the harder it will be to bring about a peaceful resolution to the crisis \u2013 if we are to pursue a genuine movement for peace then there is no place for extremists, foreign or otherwise, at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These reports are of paramount concern and the international community must stand up and take immediate -and robust- action to stop the situation in Syria developing into a full blown regional war.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pakistani Taliban: &#8216;We sent hundreds of fighters&#8217; to Syria NBC News 15 JULY, 2013 Leaders of the Pakistani Taliban claim to have sent \u201chundreds of fighters\u201d to Syria to support local mujahideen forces in their struggle against President Bashar Assad.
