The French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero indicated that “It is now indispensable that the opposition gets on a footing to prepare for the democratic transition around a provisional government that would be representative of Syrian diversity.”
The French comments also indicated that all sectors of Syrian society must be catered to in the new government that is envisioned by the opposition. “We note on this subject the important calls made by a certain number of leaders of the opposition concerning the protection of civilians” the French official said.
Commenting on the French statement, Ribal Al-Assad, Director of the ODFS, said:
“I welcome the statement by France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. It is absolutely vital that the Syrian opposition comes onto one platform and unites so it can work towards forming an inclusive democratic transitional government that represents the diversity of Syrian society. All of Syria’s ethnicities, cultures and religions must be part of its future.
“I call on both sides in the Syrian conflict to halt the violence and and to work together for a peaceful transition as that is the only way forward.”
